Tack Strips, Staples, and Subfloor Readiness

Know which sharp fasteners remain after carpet comes up and what the next installer may need.

Wood tack strip usually follows the room perimeter and carries angled points that grip the carpet. It can sit close to baseboards, thresholds, vents, and corners, where careless removal can damage nearby finishes.

Edge strips are part of the old system

Accessible staples may remain through the pad and along seams. A bright side light can help reveal fasteners after loose debris is gathered.

Match the next floor

Some replacement carpet plans may reuse suitable strip, while hard-surface flooring usually needs a different perimeter condition. Ask the installer what should stay and what should go before authorizing removal.

Subfloor repair, patching, sanding, and leveling are separate tasks unless they are specifically included.

Keep the room closed during work

Keep people and pets outside the work area until sharp strips, staples, and loose fragments are contained. Use sturdy containers for fasteners and do not leave removed strip in a walkway.
